THE INSPIRATION OF INSPIRATION

By Natasha J. Rosewood

“I always thought that to be an inspiration to others, you had to have a happy ending,” my friend, Janet responded to my suggestion that she write her story.

We were speaking of the litany of four near death experiences she had survived in as many years including a broken neck, a knife-wielding attacker, a burst artery and . . . oh yes . . . E coli.

Many of us don’t realize how we are all being watched. And I’m not talking about the camera at the ATM. We look to each other to learn, to gauge our own progress, sometimes to realize how fortunate we are . . . and to be inspired.

What many people do with their adversities is just survive them. Few of us stop to acknowledge the faith, courage and strength it takes to live on with grace. Our stories, however humble, just might be the inspiration, encouragement, hope-offering or life-giving example someone out there just might need to make it through their day.

To inspire means “to breathe life into.” By telling our tales, the winning portion of the story expands until sometimes the winning becomes the story. These anecdotes not only give others hope but also gives the event a deeper meaning and a spiritual understanding for the reason the event happened in the first place.

“There is a happy ending,” I reminded Janet. “You’re still here and you’re still smiling. That’s the inspiration. So tell your story.
